POST 178 STANDING RULES
adopted March 8, 2025
1. The following shall be admitted: All members of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary members, Sons of The American Legion members and The American Legion Riders of South Carolina, Chapter 178 members, their spouses and guests. Members are responsible for signing in their guests and shall not leave before their guests leave.
2. The employees-on-duty and any Post Officers shall have full authority to enforce these rules and may eject any member or guest for misconduct or violation of these rules.
3. All persons are expected to dress comfortably and desirably. Shorts must be at least the length of their arms and fingers fully extended, swimsuits (not properly covered) and tank tops are not allowed by employees or members. Low-cut sleeveless shirts (e.g. shirts gaping open below the armpits) are not allowed anytime.
4. All employees will enforce Post and South Carolina A.B.C. rules at all times. No intoxicated person shall be tolerated in the Post, as determined by the Bartender on duty or any Post Officer.
5. Dogs or other pets are not allowed in the post with the exception of service animals.
6. Loud, boisterous or profane language will not be tolerated. After initial warning, individual(s) will be ejected. Harassing of employees, members or their guests, will not be tolerated.
7. Members are expected to keep the Post clean by using ashtrays and trash cans to discard refuse and not use the parking lot to dump car ashtrays or other personal trash.
8. Any member removing, damaging or destroying any Post property shall be liable for all damages.
9. The Post Executive Committee shall determine the hours of canteen operation which shall be published in the monthly calendar.
10. No open alcoholic beverages shall be brought into or removed from the building at any time unless it is to or from a scheduled outdoor function such as oyster roast. Drinks obtained outside will not, under any circumstances be brought into the Canteen area.
11. Members and guests under the age of twenty-one (21) years old are not allowed to sit at the bar. Persons under the age of sixteen (16) shall leave the canteen by 8:00p.m.
12. CHECK POLICY:
a. Cashing personal checks is limited to $50.00 per day.
b. No third-party checks will be cashed.
c. Checks returned for insufficient funds (NSF) shall be redeemed within seven (7) days (unless other arrangements have been made with the Post Finance Officer) together with all bank charges plus a $25.00 returned check fee per check (this fee is subject to actual bank fees charged by the bank). The Post Finance Officer shall notify the Canteen Manager of all returned checks and the Canteen Manager shall maintain and make available to all Canteen employees a confidential list of such checks until said checks are fully redeemed. Persons on this list will not be allowed to cash any further checks until all violations are cleared. Any member having two (2) checks written to the Post returned NSF shall permanently forfeit check writing privileges.
d. The Post reserves the right not to cash any checks if cash availability is limited.
e. Continued abuse of check writing privileges may result in a letter of reprimand to the offending individual and may result in suspension of canteen privileges for ninety (90) days.
13. All minors shall be supervised by an adult when visiting the post. Adults with responsibility for the supervision of minors will be liable for any damage caused to Post property by the minors under their supervision. Post Members are responsible for their guests conduct and are liable for any damage and disruptions by their guests.
14. No one except the bartender-on-duty is allowed behind the bar without specific permission during hours that the bar is open.
15. The TVs and jukebox shall be played at a comfortable volume and will be consistent with the desires of the majority of those people present. The bartender-on-duty is authorized and expected to enforce and/or arbitrate this rule when disagreements occur. At no time should volume be so loud as to disturb the conversation between members.
16. Adjustments to the thermostat by members and guests is not allowed. Notify the employee-on-duty or appropriate Post Officer if the temperature is too uncomfortable.
17. Wearing of American Legion caps is encouraged at all official Post functions and services.
18. Complaints against Post employees shall be submitted in writing to the Canteen Manager or Sergeant-at-Arms for investigation and resolution by the Post Executive Committee. Complaints against Post Officers and members shall be submitted in writing to the Sergeant-at-Arms for investigation and resolution by the Post Executive Committee.
19. No alterations to Post property, inside or outside, will be made without the specific consent of the Post Executive Committee. Posting of flyers on doors, windows, walls, etc will be first cleared with the Commander and with coordination with the Post Executive Committee.
20. Members of The American Legion, Post 178, American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 178, Murrells Inlet, Squadron 178 of The Sons of the American Legion and American Legion Riders of South Carolina, Chapter 178 shall not hold an office in their respective organizations while employed by Post 178.
21. Members, guests and employees of Post 178 must abide by these standing rules at all times with no exceptions.
22. The annual membership dues for The American Legion, Post 178 is Sixty-Five ($65.00) Dollars due each year by December 31st. Dues are subject to change.
23. Members of The American Legion Post 178, Murrells Inlet, SC, who have attained 50 or more continuous years of membership in The American Legion, will have their membership renewal paid by Post 178.
24. Door key cards may only be sold to members with a current membership card of Post 178. That includes Legionnaires, SAL, Auxiliary and Riders. The card must show Post 178 on it. No other card is acceptable.
